White Ribbon Campaign Pakistan (WRCP) held Media Awards during its 2nd National Conference on Gender and Media in Islamabad on March 08, 2013 to commemorate the International Women’s Day.
These awards recognize the highest standards of excellence in gender sensitive reporting in print, broadcast, radio and photography. Media entries were in both Urdu and English.
Winning entries were based on clarity of message, accuracy and technical adeptness. The overall message was based on gender sensitive reporting as a resource tool for media professionals to help them change the stereotypical reporting usually practiced in Pakistan. Awards were given to journalists who take concrete steps to ensure that women were given due representation in the media. This change highlights the significant role that journalists play in Pakistan in shaping mindsets.
Around 100 journalists participated in the competition announced by the WRCP in December. Awards were presented to 27 journalists from all over the country and were given in the categories of print, broadcast and photo journalism.
Speakers included the Chief Guest, His excellency, Danish Ambassador Mr. Ole Emil Moesby, Renowned journalists, including Saleem Safi, Mohammad Malick, Quatrina Hussain, Talat Hussain, Fahd Husain, Munizae Jehangir and Mehr Bukhari, spoke about the situation of women’s rights in Pakistan and the role media could play to improve the situation.
In his address, WRCP Chief Executive Officer Omer Aftab discussed the role of WRCP in educating and mobilising men for elimination of violence against women.

The White Ribbon Campaign was founded in Canada in 1991 as the largest male initiative to end violence against women. It was based on the idea of mobilizing men and boys and instilling in them a sense of responsibility to end violence against women.
