Lahore, June 14, 2016 (PPI-OT): A Delegation from USAID Punjab Enabling Environment Project (PEEP) visited Pak-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry today and explored prospects for Chinese Assistance in the same project. In this regard the Investment Promotion specialist of USAID PEEP, Mr. Imran Masood Chaudhry held a meeting with President PCJCCI, Mr. Shah Faisal Afridi in Chair. Mr. Wang Zihai, Chairman All Chinese companies working in Pakistan.
Mr Faisal Afridi, while addressing the meeting, said that China was working for the development of same sectors in Pakistan as underlined by USAID PEEP Program and mutual collaboration could further enhance the impact and reduce the time lapse required for completion of development projects. He was confident that the mutual collaboration will be opening new vistas of opportunities for every participating organization.
“Together we will be able to amalgamate the quality and innovation for the generations to come and the journey from better to the best would be continued with dedication, passion and zeal” said Mr Shah Faisal Afridi. He pointed out that a vibrant and workable “Industrial Policy” reflecting the aspirations of our industry can pave way for innovations in manufacturing sector of the country.
Mr. Imran Masood Chaudhry while introducing the USAID Peep Project informed that Peep is mainly engrossed for Enabling the Horticulture, Dairy, and Livestock Sectors of the Punjab Region of Pakistan and The Punjab Enabling Environment Project is working to create an internationally competitive agriculture sector aimed at developing a livestock vision 2025, promoting evidence based Policy Research while improving the quality and quantity of products in domestic markets, thus driving economic growth. He mentioned that the project will create about 15,000 Jobs in the country.
He explicated that the project is partnering with the Pakistani private and public sectors, as well as civil society organizations and academia, to achieve the goal. He further elaborated that the project is aimed at first to accelerate advocacy for policy, regulatory, and institutional reforms through the private sector. Second, the project supports institutional capacity building to create reforms that will lead to a better enabling environment. Finally, it will mobilize major private sector investments in horticulture, livestock, and dairy projects in support of changes to the broader business environment. All of these efforts will serve to create and sustain substantial private sector investment and economic growth, mentioned Mr. Imran.
He said that Chinese could be helpful in the technology integration and innovation of the underlined projects. He proposed to avail Chinese assistance to have training for enhancing the skills and livestock techniques up to the world’s standard.
Mr. Wang Zihai acknowledged the efforts of USAID PEEP program and assured full cooperation from their end. Meanwhile, Mr. Wang said that he will put proposals before the Chinese ministry of commerce and will bring a concrete agenda for the official collaboration in this project. Mr. Wang was quite optimistic about the collaboration.
He also while escalating the vision of Faisal Afridi regarded innovation as one of the key ingredients in a developing country’s growth that enables economy to meet challenges of the global competitiveness. He urged on the need for Pakistan to up-grade and expedite its processes for development of innovation and target innovation as a national priority, in the hope of speeding the shift from brawn to brain that is required to prosper in this new century’s economy.
