Islamabad, October 18, 2012 (PPI-OT): Trade Development Authority Pakistan, Islamabad organized an awareness seminar on the implements of EU autonomous Trade Preference Scheme for Pakistan in collaboration with Ministry of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Islamabad today.
The purpose of this seminar was to acquaint the exporters, trade bodies and relevant organizations about the special market access being granted by EU for 75 products exported by Pakistan which is to take effect from November 1st , 2012.
It stood imperative to create awareness among the Pakistani exporters on the details of the Autonomous Trade Preference Scheme (ATPs), so that they could take full advantage of the export quotas/ceilings for the duration of the special faculty, which is expiring on Dec 31, 2013.
Mr. Asaf Ghafoor, the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Culture, National Heritage and Integration was the chief guest for the event who deliberated on the EU ATP’s Scheme in his opening remarks as a landmark in the economic history of Pakistan. He reflected on the immense opportunity emanating out of these concessions and emphasized to make the best use out of it.
He also touched upon the background of these trade concessions by EU and under covered the efforts. The Government of Pakistan has focused to achieve this objective of the grant of this concession scheme by European Union.
Mr. Fazal Abbas Maken, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce extended welcome remarks at the occasion and referred to it as a significant achievement. He informed the audience that these concessions were an initiative of EU to help Pakistan is economy recover from losses it sustained due to the flood devastation of 2010.
However, the Government of Pakistan had to undertake a lot of lobbying efforts for mustering support for WTO waiver and to allay reservations of many countries. He hoped that business community will be able to maximize benefits out of this opportunity. These concessions will be available till 31st December 2013. He also mentioned that Pakistan will be eligible for USP Plus from 2014 onwards.
Ms. Robina Taufiq Shah, Director Trade Development of Pakistan closed the ceremony by expounding on the EU ATP Scheme and by delivering a thanks note to all the guests and the participants.
The participants consisted all chambers and associations, all relevant ministries, representatives from government sector, policy institutes, well known universities, exporters and export promotion bodies.
The participants seemed very positive about this EU Scheme and expressed great interest in it and encouraged such awareness seminars for the benefit of the exporters/business community in future.
To enlighten the participants, the speakers were Mr. Mujeeb Ahmed Khan, Head WTO Cell and Research and Analysis Directorate, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Karachi and Mr. Tippu Sultan, Head Advisory Services TDAP who threw light on the significance of the EU ATP’s for the exports of Pakistan and in all the economy of Pakistan. The introduced this novel concept to the participants, how best it can be utilized and that the extent to which it can prove lucrative for us-Pakistan.
