PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Workshop held by Pakistan Science Foundation in collaboration with Embassy of France

Islamabad, May 15, 2012 (PPI-OT) – A review meeting and workshop on LAAMAP – Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) Program, being run by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in collaboration with Embassy of France, was held here at PSF on Tuesday.

PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro presided over the meeting, which was attended by French Embassy Counsellor for Development and Culture Mr. Fredric Bessat and teachers and students from LAAMAP associated schools.

IBSE program, La main à la pâte (hands-on) was launched in 1996 by French Academy of Sciences with the support of the National Institute for Pedagogical Research and the École normale supérieure (Paris) and French Ministry of Education. In addition to France, the program has met a large interest outside the France.

The experience and expertise of La main à la pâte have been spread among more than 35 countries including China, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Germany, Morocco, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, and Vietnam. Recently, the inquiry-based learning approach has been started in Afghanistan, Iran, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Switzerland, Togo and United States of America.

The IBSE Program was initiated in Pakistan with the support of French Embassy in 2010. This programme focuses on the teaching of science in primary schools to develop the questioning attitude of children during experiments.

PSF and the Academie Des Sciences, France signed a MoU of cooperation for the improvement of teaching and learning sciences at Primary and Secondary levels through an inquiry-based approach to ensure dissemination of inquiry-based teaching at Primary and Secondary school levels. Mr. Jean Salencon, President Academie Des Sciences, France and Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro Chairman PSF signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations in Paris on December 15, 2010.

PSF has conducted three workshops for teachers to promote IBSE.

Addressing the program review meeting, Dr. Soomro said a seminar on IBSE will be held in Helsinki, Finland and from Asia Pakistan has been invited to attend the event during which different countries will share their experiences and enhance their understanding about science education techniques. He said understanding of issues and problems would help in improving the program and run it effectively.

The Chairman said the teachers and students participating in IBSE workshops were their resource persons and these master trainers would train other teachers who would teach in classroom more effectively. Dr. Soomro said feedback on IBSE Program from students and teachers was imperative to improve the teaching and learning system.

French Embassy’s Counsellor for Development and Culture Mr. Fredric Bessat said he was impressed by the commitment of the teachers. He said the review meeting would help improve this program. He appreciated PSF team running IBSE and assured that the Embassy will continue support for the program.

Earlier, PSF Member Science Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto give an introduction of the program. He said IBSE was aimed at capacity-building of teachers and students, helping students to select science as career and improve methods of science teaching in Pakistan. He said the progress of the program in 30 LAAMAP associated schools of Rawalpindi and Islamabad will be reviewed to improve the program.

PSF Chief Scientific Officer also addressed the meeting.

The review meeting was largely attended by the teachers and students from different schools of Rawalpindi / Islamabad. Students performed different scientific experiments with great confidence and clear concepts. Teachers also expressed that the training also helped in polishing their existing skills about science education.
