Abu Dhabi, October 30, 2014 (PPI-OT): Ambassador of Pakistan Asif Durrani commended the government of the UAE for providing leadership in combating piracy in the region during the fourth Counter Piracy Conference concluded here in Dubai today. The two day Conference titled ‘Securing State Recovery: Sustaining Momentum at Sea, Confronting Instability at Land’ brought together members of the international community, international organisations and private sector stakeholders engaged in combating piracy off the coast of Somalia.
As a member of the UN Contact Group in the matter, Pakistan participated actively in the Conference. Addressing the gathering, the head of Pakistan delegation Ambassador Asif Durrani highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to continue to support international counter piracy efforts as part of Combined Maritime Task Force 151. He also underscored the need for building Somali institutions, infrastructure and capacity to address the challenges in a holistic manner.
Ambassador Durrani further urged all stakeholders especially the shipping industry to consider revising the High Risk Area (HRA) in the Indian Ocean, with special focus on Northern Arabian Sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Pakistan where not a single incident of Piracy has taken place. Other members of the Pakistan delegation included Dr. Faisal Aziz, Deputy Head of Mission in Abu Dhabi, Commodore (PN) Sohail Hameed, and Mr. Tariq Wazir, Deputy Consul General, Consulate General of Pakistan, Dubai.
