Pakistan Navy to Receive First of Two Corvettes by Damen Shipbuilding

Damen Shipyard facilities in Galati, Romania has launched first of the two 2300 ton Corvettes for Pakistan Navy (PN). The launching ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Abdul Aleem, PN officials, and Romanian Chief Naval overseer.

Addressing the ceremony Vice Admiral said,

The vessels will act as force multipliers in enhancing navy’s capability of safeguarding maritime frontiers and will offer flexibility in the conduct of Pakistan Navy’s initiative of independent Regional Maritime Security Patrols in the Indian Ocean.

Corvettes are a class of warships below frigate and usually weigh up to 3000 tons. Corvettes delivered to Pak Navy can be equipped with both anti-surface and anti-air weapons. A helicopter pad will add maritime patrol, Search and Rescue capability.

Damen Group is a privately owned Dutch shipbuilding, defense, and engineering company based in South Holland, Netherlands. They specialize in making warships, yachts, fishing vessels, and dry docks.

Pakistan signed a deal for two Corvettes with Damen in 2017 the first will be delivered this year while the second delivery is expected in 2020.

China State Shipbuilding Corp is also constructing an export version of Type 054AP class advanced guided missile frigate for Pakistan Navy.
