New York, April 09, 2015 (PPI-OT): Pakistan was elected today as a member of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) held in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the United Nations, New York.
Pakistan’s re-election to CND is the reflection of the trust of global community in Pakistan’s strong commitment to combat the menace of drugs and the extra-ordinary work Pakistan has been doing in the Commission.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs since its establishment in 1946, has been assisting the United Nations in supervising the application of international drug control treaties. The significance of CND for the international drug control regime has been further enhanced after being mandated by the General Assembly (GA) in 1991 to function as the governing body of UNODC.
As a member, Pakistan will work to promote Commission’s role and continue to contribute constructively towards global drug control efforts.
Pakistan has previously served as member of the Commission for eleven (11) terms in the past, and continuously since 2008. As a new member, Pakistan will now serve on the Commission from 2016 to 2019.
