Islamabad, December 03, 2012 (PPI-OT): Pakistan and the Slovak Republic had bilateral talks in Bratislava on 30 November 2012. Additional Secretary (Europe), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Ayesha Riyaz, led the Pakistan delegation which included Pakistan’s Ambassador to Austria, Mr. Khurshid Anwar, while the Slovak delegation was headed by Ambassador Peter Holasek, head of the Middle East Unit at the Slovak Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs.
Pakistan and the Slovak Republic enjoy friendly relations. This meeting between the two Foreign Ministries provided an opportunity to assess the entire range of the bilateral relations and to explore ways to further strengthen these ties.
During the wide-ranging talks, the two sides took stock of bilateral relations in various fields. Both states agreed that the full potential of bilateral trade had not been achieved and that the two sides should institutionalize their trade and commercial cooperation by initiating a Joint Working Group on trade matters. Both sides also underline the need for enhancing their bilateral contacts particularly at the political level.
The Additional Secretary appreciated the support of the Slovak Republic for Pakistan’s effort for greater market access in the EU and sought the Slovak Republic’s support for Pakistan’s request to the EU for inclusion in the GSP plus scheme.
The Additional Secretary also met Ambassador Emil Kuchar, Special Representative of the Slovak Foreign Ministry for Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Ambassador Anton Hajduk, who deals with Pakistan. Views were exchanged on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including Afghanistan.
Each side agreed to augment their cooperation and coordination at various international forums. The Additional Secretary thanked the Slovak Republic’s support on Pakistan’s candidatures to the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2013-2015 and the UN Security Council for the term 2012-2013.
The Additional Secretary invited her counterpart to visit Pakistan for bilateral political consultations next year. The two sides agreed to institutionalize the mechanism of regular consultations.
