Islamabad, March 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Science and Technology (S and T) Mir Changez Khan Jamali on Thursday called upon the students to find solutions to issues like energy crisis which has gripped the entire world. He was speaking at the launching of International Travelling Expo titled “Energy for a Sustainable World” at National Centre for Physics (NCP), Quaid-e-Azam University.
French Ambassador Philippe Thiebuad, Secretary Ministry of S and T Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Chairman, Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro, NCP Board of Governors Chairman, Prof. Dr. Ishfaq Ahmed, a large number of scientists, teachers and students were present on this occasion.
PSF in collaboration with Embassy of France has arranged the two-month long Expo in Pakistan which will travel from Islamabad to Muzzafarabad (AJK), Gilgit, Abbottabad, Gujrat, Larkana and Quetta.
The Federal Minister said students’ attention towards resolution of such issues could only be diverted through science popularization through Expos that pave way for national development.Mr. Jamali said Expos provide an opportunity to young scientists to develop new ideas and concepts of science. He lauded PSF and France Embassy role in arranging the international travelling expos in Pakistan and assured his full support to continue such activities.
French Ambassador Mr. Philippe Thiebuad said during Pakistani President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari’s meeting with French President in Paris it was decided that Pakistan and France will enhance their cooperation in the field of higher education and energy sector.
The Ambassador said the entire world countries are facing the challenge of energy crisis. He said to overcome this issue there was a need to add energy efficiency which could be achieved through international cooperation to develop new technologies and learning from each other. He said this exhibition will create interest among students to develop new ideas of energy efficiency and its sustainable use for national development.
Secretary Ministry of S and T Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar congratulated PSF for creating awareness among students and general masses about scientific concepts. He said the Expo on energy in Pakistan was a testimony to their visit to France last year. Mr. Tarar said the exhibition create a lot of interest among young scientists to develop new ideas about sustainable use of energy. He assured Ministry’s continued support to PSF in its different programmes meant for promotion of science and technology.
PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro said though the Expo was opened for students in Islamabad on March it was formally launched on March 7. He apprised the audience about different programmes of the Foundation aimed at promotion of scientific and technological research in the country. He specially made mention to its research support, science popularization, R and D Industry Linkage programmes.
He also talked about MoUs with different organizations to cooperate each other in promotion of science in the country. He said PSF has also taken up the task to send Pakistani students in London International Youth Science Forum so that they could exchange their ideas with other students of the world for betterment of the mankind.
Dr. Soomro said PSF in collaboration with Embassy of France is carrying on two programmes including holding international travelling expos and promotion of inquiry-based science education in the country. He said Paris Museum of Natural History and Pakistan Museum of Natural History are also joining hands and a MoU will be signed soon in this regard.
The Expo will provide a great opportunity to the students of all age groups, faculty members, researchers and general public to get firsthand knowledge about various forms of Energy, ways to enhance the Energy Resources and their proper uses for the national development, he maintained.
NCP Director General Dr. Hamid Saleem thanked PSF and France Embassy for providing them an opportunity to host the Expo on their venue. He also thanked the participants of the launching ceremony. He requested the French Embassy for initiating research collaboration with NCP.
