Islamabad: A meeting of the Standing Committee on Narcotics Control was held on 30th January, 2012 at the office of Chief City Police Officer, Lahore. The Committee reviewed the progress on the announcement of the Honourable Prime Minister regarding making Lahore as the Drug Free City. At the outset the honourable Chairman, Mr. Murtaza Javed Abbasi welcomed the Members of the Committee and other participants of the meeting.
The Project Director, Lahore Drug Free City Project briefed the Committee on the background, targets and achievements of the project. It has five major components that includes enforcement through better coordination between different law enforcement agencies to stop or affect the drug supply chain; reduction of drug demand through awareness programmes; treatment of drug addicts by admitting them in the government hospitals; rehabilitation of addicts to make them useful citizens through training as well as employment; and projecting the activities as well as achievements of the project. Later on, the Chief City Police Officer Lahore made a presentation on the measures to stop the drug supply chain.
It was reflected in the report that major targets set out for the project by the Project Steering Committee have been achieved. However, he also indicated the challenges and issues faced by the Police in meeting targets of the project.
The Committee appreciated the efforts of the team and it was found that more efforts need to be done to achieve substantial success. It was observed that funds paucity is seriously affecting progress of the project. The Government of Punjab has not fulfilled its commitment of releasing 40 percent shares of funds. It was found that political will is the most critical element in the success of the project.
The Committee unanimously decided to ask the Government of Punjab to approve its part of the project and release the requisite funds to make this project a success. It was also decided to call upon the Chief Minister to ensure early release of funds. The Committee also assured its support to the Minister for Narcotics to ask the Prime Minister to provide more funds to the Ministry to save future of our future generations.
The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from and to the chair.
