Islamabad: Registrar, Press Council of Pakistan has written a letter to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Government of Sindh ,Karachi regarding legal action against the culprits, who carried out attacks on 20-21.03.2012 on Geo TV Satellite Van parked on I.I. Chundrigar Road and Cable Operators whereby some miscreants have burnt newspapers (i.e. “Jang” and Daily “The News”) at Karachi.
Registrar PCP has stated in his letter that the Chairman, Press Council of Pakistan, Raja M. Shafqat Khan Abbasi had taken notice of the incident and drew the attention of the concerned authorities of Provincial Government of Sindh towards the incident occurred in Karachi through letter dated 20.04.2012. In the said letter he stated that “the freedom of press as well as right to access to information are garneted under article 19 and 19-A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan”. Under sub-section 2 of section 8 of the PCP ordinance 2002,it is statutory obligation of the Press Council of Pakistan “to act as shield to freedom or against any sort of interference in the proper functioning of the press, by any person, party or organization, etc.
Registrar PCP reiterated that despite directions by the Chief Secretary, Government of Sindh, on 7th April, 2012, the office of Additional Chief Secretary (Home) has not provided the steps or action taken in this regard. He has further asked for a detailed report of the incident occurred on 20-21.03.2012 and steps or action taken so far against the persons responsible to this offence within 7 days failing which appropriate legal proceeding will be initiated.
