JRL condemns desecration of Jamia Masjid Srinagar

Srinagar, January 05, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has strongly denounced the desecration of Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, by some masked persons and said that the move was intended to link the Kashmir freedom movement with global groups, which will not be tolerated.

Syed Ali Gilani telephonically addressing from his residence a gathering held at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar while condemning the sacrilegious act said that those behind the act had nothing to do with Islam.

He said the Indian media used this act to link Kashmir’s indigenous freedom struggle with the global terror outfits because doing so suits New Delhi. “The media highlighted the act because New Delhi has failed to break the resolve of the people of Kashmir. Our struggle is a people’s struggle and purely indigenous in nature. We will not allow anybody to link our freedom struggle with the global terror groups,” he said.

Syed Ali Gilani said that New Delhi was using some people to give the Kashmir struggle a different colour. The shameful act by some people at Jamia Masjid has nothing to do with the Kashmir movement, he maintained.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in his speech said that the desecration of Jamia Masjid had deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Kashmiri people. He said such an act will not be tolerated, adding that steps will be taken to maintain the sanctity of the grand mosque. He said for the past 500 years, the pulpit of Jamia Masjid has imparted Islamic teachings to the people of Kashmir and also raised the voice against miseries inflicted on them ever since the 1931 massacre. “Our politics is based on Islamic principles,” he added.

The Mirwaiz said that the move to desecrate Jamia Masjid was aimed at maligning the Kashmir’s indigenous freedom struggle and link it with the global outfits but there was no foreign hand in or support to the Kashmir movement. He said people of Kashmir are offering supreme sacrifices since 1931, in general and from 1989, in particular.

The Mirwaiz while reacting to the Indian Home Minister, Rajnath Singh’s recent statement regarding talks said that New Delhi never offered unconditional dialogue to the resistance leadership and instead crossed all limits of repression in Kashmir. He, however, said if New Delhi was serious in resolving the Kashmir dispute, allowing plebiscite or holding tripartite dialogue was the way out. On the contrary, all the efforts by the Indian government have been towards a military solution, he deplored. Rajnath had stated in the Indian Parliament that the government of India could have resolved the stalemate in Kashmir had the Hurriyat leadership not shut the doors on the all-party delegation that visited the occupied territory in 2016.

He said the former BJP leader Yahwant Sinha has recently made a confession that BJP-led government at New Delhi was following the policy of military might. He said that earlier New Delhi would claim that Kashmir struggle was confined to few pockets but today the people of Kashmir valley, Pir Panchal, Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Poonch yearn for freedom.

Muhammad Yasin Malik in his address said Jamia Masjid is today the best example of united face of Kashmiris. “Right from the times of Maulana Muhammad Yousuf Shah (RA) to Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq and to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, downtown Srinagar has always stood against oppression. “Mirwaiz Umar Farooq didn’t even enjoy his childhood and had to shoulder huge responsibilities,” he added.

Muhammad Yasin Malik said that the oppression in Kashmir had touched new heights and even 18-month-old baby was turned blind by troops with pellet firing. He said that the Kashmiri youth must understand the gravity of the situation.

He said elections are round the corner and those who stated that whether boys killed by Indian troops near army camps had gone to buy toffees or milk, are once again seeking votes. Aren’t they the same people who are responsible for imposition of draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) under which forces can barge into any house or kill anybody on mere suspicion?” he asked. Muhammad Yasin Malik urged the Kashmiri youth to submit their suggestions to the Joint Resistance Leadership to carry forward the freedom movement in a more effective manner.
