Gilani Urges OIC to Take Concrete Steps for Women’s Empowerment

Islamabad: Chairman Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has urged the OIC-member countries to move beyond declarations and translate their commitments into concrete action for socio-economic empowerment of women. Addressing the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women in Islamabad today, he welcomed the delegates from OIC member states in the conference.

According to Radio Pakistan, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani emphasized the need for OIC member countries to adopt measurable targets for girls' education, women's leadership, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, and protection against gender-based violence. He highlighted Pakistan's commitment to advancing women's empowerment through various avenues, including education, digital inclusion, entrepreneurship, financial access, and employment opportunities.

The Chairman Senate assured that the government of Pakistan and its parliament are prepared to collaborate closely with OIC member states and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) to advance a shared agenda for women's empowerment rooted in common faith, values, and aspirations. He underscored that women constitute nearly half of the population of OIC countries, and no nation can achieve inclusive growth while excluding half of its human capital from economic and political participation.

Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani noted that Islam has guaranteed women rights to education, property, inheritance, economic participation, and dignity for over fourteen hundred years, with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) providing a timeless framework for ensuring women's meaningful participation in society. He paid tribute to the contributions of Muslim women in various fields, including education, governance, science, diplomacy, business, and public service.

The Chairman Senate described Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world, whose vision continues to inspire generations. He also mentioned initiatives such as the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Waseela-e-Taleem, and other efforts aimed at women-led enterprises, financial inclusion, digital skills, and e-commerce. Furthermore, he highlighted the legislation enacted during his tenure as prime minister, including laws against workplace harassment, acid crimes, and anti-women practices.
