Energy starved Leather Industry has largest ever participation in Asian Pacific Leather Fair Hong Kong

Karachi, April 04, 2013 (PPI-OT): Energy starved Leather Industry had largest ever participation in Asian Pacific Leather Fair Hong Kong this year. More than 75 companies participated in the fair. Pakistan first time participated in global contest of Tannery of the year 2013 and Pakistani tannery based at Lahore was decorated with first position in Highly Commended Award of Asia and was declared second best tannery in Asia after Japan.

The Award Ceremony was held in Convention Center Hong Kong among gathering of hundreds of tanners from all over the world. The awards for Europe, Africa, Asia and South America were decided by panel of judges consisting of Mr. Ivan Kral UNIDO PROJECT COORDINATOR FOR LEATHER. Dr. Patricia Casey, Vice President International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies. Mrs. Kim Reid, Head of Talent, Leadership and Learning of British Airways.

The finalist made presentations about their commitment to environment community, quality and best practices. Pakistan first time participated in the contest and Lahore based tannery M/s Royal Leather Industries picked the award. The award has enhanced the image of Leather Industry of Pakistan in general and award holder in particular.

Due to high cost of business in Pakistan Leather Sector faced stiff competition from its competitors India, China and Bangladesh. The quality of Pakistan Leather and Leather Goods was highly appreciated by International Buyers.

An emergent meeting of Pakistan Tanners was held in Hong Kong under the Chairmanship of Mr. Agha Saiddain Chairman PTA Central to decide collective strategy in the fair. It was decided not to sign long term agreements due to energy crisis and scarcity of raw material in the country.

It was also decided that Pakistan Exhibitors who display raw skins or Wet Blue on their stands will not be allowed to participate on Pakistani Pavilion in future PTA decided to allot separate block for traders without proper tannery support in future fairs. Agha Saiddain requested for 5% relief package to the tannery to overcome high cost of business due to energy crisis in the country and other problem.
