Islamabad: Only those societies prosper and grow where social, economic and political rights of individuals are protected. The Pakistan People’s Party has always given precedence to the protection and promotion of human rights at all levels of human existence in Pakistani society. For the further growth of society, all the challenges will be taken as opportunities in the realm of human rights and life will be made easy for the common man.
Fiza Batool Gilani, Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for Women Empowerment, expressed these views today while talking to the officials of the ministry of Human Rights. The Goodwill Ambassador was accompanied by Mrs. Shahnaz Wazir Ali during the meeting.
During a detailed briefing, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Human Rights, mentioned that PPP has always been in the forefront when it comes to protecting human rights and their promotion. During Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s second stint in power in 1995, human rights was created as a wing and it goes to the credit of the present political dispensation that it elevated the said wing into full-fledged division in 2008.
Putting special emphasis on women rights, the Goodwill Ambassador said, “you have to educate the man to protect the woman”. She further said that human rights must be taught as a separate discipline at school, college and university levels.
When it was brought into the notice of the Goodwill Ambassador that there is a fund by the name of “Women in Distress and Detention Fund”, she emphasized that all obstacles must be removed at the earliest to ensure it speedy disbursement to the needy and destitute.
Fiza Batool Gilani took special interest in alleviating the suffering of those rotting in jails just because of the non-payment of fines. She appreciated the recent passage of a bill by Senate through which free medical assistance has been ensured to the jail inmates.
The Goodwill ambassador stressed upon the importance of making the jail conditions better for the inmates. She said that juvenile justice system must be ensured and a juvenile court should be established in Islamabad as a model.
Fiza Batool Gilani stressed upon the need for public-private partnership for the protection and promotion of human rights in society. She said that media can play pivotal role for the protection of human rights by creating awareness among the masses.
