Door to Door verification of voters in Karachi

Karachi, December 10, 2012 (PPI-OT):

Honourable Justice Fakhuruddin G. Ebrahim
Chief Election Commissioner
Election Commission of Pakistan
ISLAMABAD

Respected Sir,

Door to Door Verification of Voters in Karachi

PPP Sindh had earlier been proposing a technology based ‘easy to comprehend and implement solution for correcting the voter’s lists. Our contention had been that the verification process had brought in political influences and damaged a reliable data base.

Now that the Honourable Supreme Court has found it necessary to correct the damage, it is important that this time the door to door verification should be done in such a way that all genuine voters residing in Karachi are registered on the address on which they are presently residing.

With due respect PPP Sindh wishes to make the following proposals:

a. It should be ensured that every residential unit in Karachi is visited by the verifying team. For this purpose the existing list of voters should not be used as a reference data. (For example no voter has been registered at the residence of the undersigned Flat 202, Building C-90, Commercial Street 10, Phase 4, DHA and if the existing list is used as a reference, no verifying team is likely to visit this address).

b. Maximum efforts should be made to make this exercise as visible as possible. For this purpose, the names of verifying teams, the area allocated to each team, the phone contact of team leader as well as the date and timings of their visit to the area should be advertised in leading newspapers.

c. The team should visit the residences on holidays or after working hours when male members of the family are expected to be home.

d. Announcement that a team is visiting an area should be made by loudspeakers from mosques/Imambargahs of the area.

e. A repeat visit should be made by the verifying team in case a house is found closed. A sticker notice should be affixed on the door of a closed house notifying the date/time when the team will make a repeat visit.

f. Data collected during a day should be compiled in a proper format by the next day and should be made available for inspection.

g. Your honour may be pleased to note that the assistance of the Army and the FC has been ordered by the Honourable Supreme Court for security reasons only. It is therefore proposed that their role should be limited to security aspects only.

Respected Sir,
