Demo in Srinagar over Tosa Maidan lease extension

Srinagar, April 06, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a large number of people from the areas surrounding Tosa Maidan in Badgam staged a demonstration at Press Enclave in Srinagar to press their demand for non-extension of lease of the meadow to Indian Army.

Indian Army has been using Tosa Maidan as a firing range since 1964 after acquiring it on 50-year lease, which is expiring on April 18. Residents of the areas around Tosa Maidan have been demanding of the puppet administration not to extend the lease and convert it into a tourist destination.

The protesters while talking to mediamen said that many people and cattle had lost their lives and scores others had got injured due to the explosion caused by the unexploded shells. They said that hundreds of houses had developed cracks.

“People have become deaf. Not only has grazing in the upper reaches of Tosa Maidan firing range been hit, but people are not even able to attend their fields due to the continuous firing by the army during the day,” they said. The protesters said that they would launch mass agitation if the lease period was extended by the puppet administration.
