Committee Constituted to Resolve the Issue of Lady Health Workers

Islamabad: A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Ms. Shehnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on 5th April, 2012 to discuss and resolve the issues of lady health workers. Meeting was also attended by Secretary, Inter Provincial Coordination Division, representative of Ministry of Finance and Planning and Development Division. Other participants included senior officials from Health and Finance Divisions from all four provinces and AKJ.

Matter of delay in the payment of the salaries of the Lady Health workers was discussed in detail, Chair appreciated Health Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on introducing bridge financing to tackle the issue of timely payment of salaries and urged other provinces to come up with similar solution.

It was decided that Provinces will send their demand in time along with expenditure statement of previous release and Federal Government will release funds on time. Provincial Governments will also ensure timely release of salaries to LHWs and Lady Health Supervisors.

All participants endorsed the vision of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed of LHW program reflected in the woman living in the village providing community based services. LHWs have a critical role in Primary Health Care, Maternal and child health and in reduction of Infant mortality rate (IMR), maternal mortality rate and immunization of children.

It is a stipend based system of localized service with flexible work hours. It was decided that the performance based structure will be discussed in a second meeting to be held next week. All the provinces will come up with province specific solutions to resolve the issues and address the demands of the LHWs and their supervisors.
