Bangladesh: Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for Ex-PM Hasina Over Protest Crackdown

Dhaka: In Bangladesh, prosecutors have demanded the death sentence for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over a deadly crackdown on student-led protests last year. Sheikh Hasina Wajid, who has fled to India, is on trial for crimes against humanity for the death of over fourteen hundred people who were killed during weeks of unrest that ended her fifteen-year rule.

According to Radio Pakistan, a leaked audio clip has revealed that Hasina ordered security forces to use lethal weapons against protesters. This order allegedly led to the widespread violence and deaths during the protests, which sought to challenge Hasina’s government and eventually culminated in her fall from power.

The trial has sparked intense debates within Bangladesh and among international observers. The charges against Hasina are severe, with prosecutors arguing that the scale and intent behind the crackdown warrant the ultimate punishment. Critics, however, claim that the trial is politically motivated and accuse the current government of using it to settle scores with its former leader.

As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains a focal point of public and media attention, both within Bangladesh and globally. The outcome could have significant implications for the political landscape of the country and its approach to handling dissent in the future.
