UN Honors 57 Peacekeepers Including Two From Pakistan

United Nations: The United Nations has paid tribute to fifty-seven military, police, and civilian peacekeepers from thirty-two countries, including two from Pakistan, who sacrificed their lives for peace last year while serving in missions across the globe. This tribute was part of a solemn ceremony held to mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

According to Radio Pakistan, the ceremony featured the posthumous awarding of Dag Hammarskjold medals. Among the awardees were Sepoy Muhammad Tarique and Havildar Ahsan Ullah Khan, both of whom served with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The awards were accepted on behalf of Pakistan by the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who was accompanied by the Mission’s Military Adviser, Col. Umar Shafique. Other heads of missions and military attach©s were also in attendance to honor the fallen peacekeepers.
