OIC chief meets Egyptian foreign minister in Cairo

Cairo (UNA-OIC) � Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen met Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on the sidelines of Al-Azhar Conference in Support of Jerusalem currently being held in Cairo.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Egypt and the OIC, as well as the current issues of the region and the activities of the Organization.

Al-Othaimeen underlined that Egypt has been constant in earnestly supporting the OIC since its inception. He expressed his full confidence that this role, befitting a large and influential Muslim country like Egypt, will continue with even greater momentum.

The secretary general highly commended the Egyptian work on counterterrorism, emphasizing that the OIC stands in firm solidarity with Egypt in condemning terrorist acts targeting Egyptians � Muslims and Christians alike. He further expressed appreciation for Egypt's role in consolidating the Palestinian national reconciliation, pointing out that Egypt is a strong voice in negotiations and an acceptable broker to all parties to the national reconciliation.

On religious discourse, Al-Othaimeen hailed the Egyptian role in promoting tolerance and coexistence, stressing that Egypt provides a successful model for all religiously diverse countries. By way of contribution to these efforts, he added, the OIC has established the Sawt al-Hikmah (Voice of Wisdom) Centre with the objective of steering the Muslim youth away from terrorist recruiters.

For his part, the Egyptian foreign minister described as considerable the effort made by the OIC to foster Islamic solidarity, stressing that he shares the same views with the secretary general on all issues at hand. He affirmed that Egypt will remain steadfast in combating terrorism and redressing religious discourse, through such mechanisms as it may keep younger generations immune from extremist ideologies.

Health Advisory: Shoaib Malik update

Hamilton, January 16, 2018 (PPI-OT):“While trying to take a run Shoaib Malik was hit on his head with a wayward throw. Shoaib was assessed on field by match doctor and myself. He did not have any symptoms of a concussion and was able to carry on playing. After getting out he was reassessed and was showing delayed concussion signs. He is doing well and is resting”, said Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, Vib Singh. As advised by match doctor and Pakistan Team Physiotherapist, he will not be taking any further part in this match.

ISESCO chief to attend Al-Azhar conference on Jerusalem tomorrow

Rabat (UNA-OIC) � Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri will attend the Al-Azhar International Conference in Support of Jerusalem, which will begin on Wednesday at Al-Azhar Conference Center in Cairo.

The ISESCO director general will preside over the first session of the conference, to be held in cooperation with the Muslim Council of Elders, under the theme of "Raising awareness about the issue of Jerusalem", ISESCO said in a statement.

The two-day conference aims to discuss effective mechanisms to support Jerusalem. The agenda of the conference includes discussing a number of topics and issues related to three main themes: The Arab identity of Jerusalem and its mission; Raising awareness on the issue of Jerusalem; and The international responsibility toward Jerusalem.

Brussels to host emergency meeting on Palestine on Jan. 31

Brussels (UNA-OIC) � The Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC) for the Coordination of International Assistance to Palestine decided to convene an emergency meeting at the end of this month in the Belgian capital Brussels.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen SA�reide, as well as the Liaison Committee members, decided to hold a meeting to be hosted by the EU and under the chairmanship of Norway in Brussels on January 31, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Office of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The meeting will address the acceleration of initiatives for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and discuss the Palestinian Authority's control over the entire Gaza Strip within the framework of the Egyptian-brokered reconciliation deal between Fatah and Hamas signed in Cairo on 12 October 2017.

The AHLC was established on 1 October 1993. It is a 15-member committee chaired by Norway and co-sponsored by the EU and US. In addition, the United Nations participates together with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The committee serves as the principal policy-level coordination mechanism for development assistance to the Palestinian people. It seeks to promote dialogue between donors, the Palestinian Authority and Israel � the occupying power.
