Dhaka: A special tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wajid, to death after she was found guilty of crimes against humanity. The court also awarded her life in prison in three other cases.
According to Radio Pakistan, Hasina Wajid was tried in absentia for ordering a deadly crackdown on student-led protests last year, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 people and left thousands injured. The student-led protests eventually led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s government, after which she fled to India and has been living in self-exile.
Bangladesh’s special tribunal also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity.
