Government Prioritizes Port Efficiency and Sustainable Trade Practices, Says Qaiser.
Islamabad: Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh announced the government’s commitment to enhancing port efficiency and container management to facilitate timely and cost-effective shipment processing. Speaking at the ‘National Policy Dialogue on Circularity and Used Textile Trade in Pakistan’ conference in Islamabad, Shaikh highlighted the significance of Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure in supporting the import of second-hand textiles.
According to Radio Pakistan, Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh underscored that more than 430,000 metric tons of used clothing were imported into Pakistan in the last fiscal year. The Minister pointed out that managing these imports efficiently is crucial for boosting local economies, creating jobs, and promoting textile recycling. He further elaborated on the government’s ongoing initiatives to establish waste sorting hubs aimed at textile reuse and recycling, which are vital for managing textile waste and mitigating the environmental impact of the global textile trade.

e Minister also discussed the government’s commitment to implementing regulations designed to limit pollutants, particularly harmful chemicals, from textile shipments. These efforts aim to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable shipping practices. Additionally, Qaiser Ahmed Shaikh mentioned that the government is exploring green shipping alternatives, including the use of cleaner fuels and energy-efficient technologies, to minimize carbon emissions from shipping operations.
