Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed all government institutions to implement QR codes on all bills to facilitate citizens. He addressed a review meeting in Islamabad focused on the promotion of a cashless economy.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of achieving the digital payments system goals within the stipulated timeframe. He acknowledged the efforts of the government's economic team and the State Bank for their role in promoting digital payment systems, such as RAAST, for salaries, pensions, and direct payments to vendors at both federal and provincial levels.
The Prime Minister also praised the Ministry of Finance for facilitating direct payments totaling 1.6 trillion rupees by the federal and provincial governments from July 2025 to January 2026. Additionally, he commended the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for successfully providing relief funds to seventy-one percent of deserving recipients under the Prime Minister's Ramadan Relief Package.
The meeting highlighted that the number of individuals benefiting from digital banking has exceeded one hundred and twenty-seven million. Participants received briefings on the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Finance, State Bank, BISP, Ministry of Information Technology, and other related institutions to promote digital payments across the country.
Furthermore, a briefing was provided on the dashboard of the digital payments ecosystem, showcasing the progress and steps taken towards a cashless economy.
