Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring press freedom and the financial security of journalists. This announcement came during a meeting with a delegation of journalists from the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalist, and Islamabad Press Club.
According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting focused on the establishment of a Journalists Protection Commission and other pressing issues, such as the illegal dismissal of journalists. Minister Tarar assured the delegation that the rights of journalists would be safeguarded, with the establishment of the Journalists Protection Commission nearing completion.
The Minister expressed concern over the recent dismissal of journalists by media houses and pledged to address this issue with media owners. Despite the government having cleared a significant sum of dues to these media organizations, the dismissals continue to be a troubling matter.
Furthermore, Minister Tarar discussed plans to expand and enhance the health insurance system for journalists. He also committed to ensuring the implementation of the Charter of Demand concerning the attack on the National Press Club. The government recognizes addressing the challenges faced by the journalist community as a top priority.
The delegation expressed gratitude towards the Minister for his commitment to resolving the challenges faced by journalists.
