New york: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar has affirmed that Pakistan's approach will remain anchored in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, with a commitment to international law and multilateralism.

According to Radio Pakistan, Dar made these remarks while presiding over the High-Level Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes." During his address, he welcomed the adoption of a resolution by the Security Council, tabled by Pakistan, aimed at "Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes."

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for the pacific settlement of disputes, in alignment with the UN Charter and the expectations of the international community. As Pakistan holds the Presidency of the Security Council, Dar expressed the country's dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities with purpose and conviction, acknowledging the constructive engagement of Council members with Pakistan's delegation.

Ishaq Dar highlighted the necessity of multilateralism in addressing global challenges, asserting that peaceful settlement of disputes is vital for global stability. He addressed concerns such as geopolitical rivalries, erosion of trust in multilateral institutions, and non-compliance with Security Council resolutions, which undermine commitments to international peace and security.

He reiterated Pakistan's belief in multilateralism as a longstanding member of the United Nations and a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping. He noted the Security Council's primary responsibility in peaceful dispute resolution, while acknowledging the persistence of unresolved conflicts on the Council's agenda, citing Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir as examples.

Dar called attention to the ongoing plight of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, highlighting the severe humanitarian impact and urging an immediate ceasefire. He reaffirmed Pakistan's stance on Jammu and Kashmir as an internationally recognized disputed territory, underscoring the need for its resolution in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Addressing the Indus Waters Treaty, Dar described it as a successful example of dialogue and diplomacy between India and Pakistan, despite current challenges posed by India's actions. He urged revitalization of trust in the UN system, advocating for equal treatment of conflicts based on international law.

The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by stressing the importance of the debate as a reaffirmation of faith in multilateralism, a recommitment to peaceful dispute resolution, and a call for action from the Security Council.
