World Intellectual Property Day celebrated by organising seminar at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Islamabad, April 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): World Intellectual Property Day (IP Day) was celebrated by organizing a seminar at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Friday. Theme of this year was “Creativity-The Next Generation”. The event was organized by Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO) in collaboration with SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).

The Director General IPO-Pakistan Mr. Tarik Feroze said that World IP Day reminds us establishment of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in the year 1977 which is focal United Nation’s Body for advice to Member Countries on Intellectual Property issues including Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Geographical Indications. He said that creative minds are real asset of the society all the scientific, technological and social development is gift of creative people.

He was of the view that no doubt, our old generation of creative people has done their level best for the service of humanity and now the next generation has to play its role for betterment of the world. Therefore theme of the year 2013 has been set “Creativity-The Next Generation”.

Mr. Tarik Feroze further said that government of Pakistan being fully cognizant of the interests of Creators, Scientists, Inventors, Business Community Innovators and others, has established the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan) as an Integrated Intellectual Property Management Body in 2005. IPO Pakistan has also been given permanent legal cover in the form of IPO Act, 2012. Government of Pakistan is fully committed for protection of Intellectual Property Rights in the country with balanced approach.

The DG IPO-Pakistan said that achievements of IPO-Pakistan since its inception is commendable in arousing public awareness and sensitizing the consumers of their legitimate rights to opt for genuine and branded products and services.

It has made efforts to curb counterfeiting and piracy with the support of enforcement agencies of Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Customs; fostered fair trade practices; improved service delivery in protection of Intellectual Property Rights and increased coordination to wage a war against unfair trade.

Government of Pakistan is well aware and has unwavering resolve that a lot more needs to be accomplished to watch the interests of Intellectual Property Right holders and users. We are committed to improve our image in the comity of nations as a responsible and Intellectual Property compliant nation. For that we are in active collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other international organizations in the related field.

Mr. Zafar Bakhtarwari, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry; stressed the need for developing close linkages between IPO and business entrepreneurs for guidance regarding IPRs. Mr. Iqbal Tabish; Secretary General, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry; underlined the need for developing close interactions among SAARC member countries so that better understanding may be developed through sharing of knowledge and experiences of each other to manage IPR issues.

Presentations on IP Management in Pakistan with reference to Trademark and Geographical Indications as Economic Tools for Business Development were given by Deputy Directors IPO, Muhammad Ismail and Nadia Zubair Shah. Ex-Collector Customs Mr. Muhammad Siddique, deliberated the Role of Pakistan Customs in Enforcement of IPRs while Director General SEECH-NUST Dr. Arshad Ali gave presentation on Experience in Introducing IP Course for University Students”. The senior officials and representatives of different business and trade related organizations, IP experts, academia and civil society participated in the Seminar.
