Lahore, January 30, 2013 (PPI-OT): A delegation of the United States (US) government engineering experts headed by Ambassador Robin Raphael and James B Balocki, today called on the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Syed Raghib Shah to discuss ways and means for technical cooperation amongst the US government engineering organizations and WAPDA in water and hydropower sectors.
Speaking on the occasion, WAPDA Chairman said that technical cooperation among the engineering organizations of Pakistan and the US could prove to be instrumental in optimum utilization of water and hydropower resources in Pakistan. Underlining the importance of sharing the expertise, he further said that technical support, like that of financial assistance, is equally significant in implementation of projects.
Referring to the expertise earned by WAPDA since 1958, the Chairman said that WAPDA is the premier engineering organization in Pakistan and has to its credit the construction of a number of gigantic projects including the Indus Basin Replacement Plan – the largest engineering activity of its time. Both WAPDA and the US engineering organizations may benefit from the experience, they have gained over the years, for the common cause of progress and prosperity, he added.
Mr. Shah apprised the delegation that WAPDA had already inked memoranda of understanding with its Chinese and Korean counterparts for technical collaboration. He expressed the hope that WAPDA and the US engineering organizations, with auspices of their governments, would also formalize such an arrangement soon.
WAPDA Chairman also thanked for the US financial assistance to help complete various water and power projects in Pakistan including rehabilitation of Tarbela Power Station, Gomal Zam Dam and Satpara Dam. He also lauded the Us resolve to help Pakistan arrange finances for other key projects including Diamer Basha and Kurram Tangi dams. WAPDA highly values the US support in both water and power sectors, he further said.
Ambassador Robin Raphael said that the USAID is providing assistance to Pakistan for a number of projects to help overcome electricity shortages and make water available for irrigated agriculture in the remote areas. Appreciating the partnership between the USAID and WAPDA, she expressed the hope that this cooperation would be further strengthened in the days to come.
Later, the matters relating to establishing a technical, dialogue amongst WAPDA and the US engineering organizations for planning, development and management of water and power resources and their infrastructures were discussed in the meeting, apart from exploring possibilities for exchange of experts. Deliberations were also made regarding support sponsorship for involvement of Pakistan at international water forums.
