Lahore, March 15, 2016 (PPI-OT): The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) hydel power stations delivered as many as 31.88 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity to the National Grid in the year 2015, while as many as 2.95 billion units during the first two months of the current year i.e. January and February 2016. This generation registered an increase of 208.75 million (0.66%) and 238.223 million (8.78%) units respectively as compared to the corresponding periods of the yester years.
This increased generation has been achieved due to better hydrological condition, and efficient operation and maintenance of hydel power stations. It is worth mentioning that WAPDA delivers more than 31 billion units of hydel electricity to the National Grid every year on the average. Hydel is the cheapest, cleanest and environment-friendly source of electricity generation, which plays a pivotal role to stabilise electricity tariff in the country.
According to the data presented to the National Assembly on March 14, 2016 by the Ministry of Water and Power regarding per unit generation cost of electricity produced from various sources, it is Rs.1.78 for hydel, which is far lower than per unit cost of electricity generated from all other sources.
In comparison to hydel electricity, it is Rs. 7.97 per unit for gas, Rs.11.74 for residual furnace oil (RFO), Rs.18.61 for high speed diesel (HSD), Rs. 9.06 from IPPs Rs.12.06 for coal, Rs.8.33 for nuclear, Rs.14.31 for wind, Rs.11.78 for bio-gases, Rs. 22.81 for solar, and Rs. 10.49 per unit for electricity imported from Iran.
It is pertinent to mention that hydel power generation capacity of WAPDA stands at about 6902 MW – about one third of the total installed capacity in the country. It is a matter of great satisfaction that despite some of WAPDA hydel power stations being as old as 50 years, their generation capacity has stayed intact due to their proper maintenance and efficient operation by WAPDA.
