Lahore, September 22, 2016 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (R) today visited two mega hydro projects being implemented by WAPDA namely Diamer Basha Dam and Dasu Hydropower Project.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman said that Diamer Basha Dam and Dasu Hydropower Project are of vital importance to meet the increasing requirement of water and electricity in the country. Although the process of land acquisition, preparatory works and infrastructure development in the projects’ areas are continuing, it is all the more important to initiate construction work on main components of the two projects in the shortest possible time. Therefore, WAPDA has chalked out plans for initiation of main construction works on both projects as early as possible, the Chairman further said.
During his visit to Diamer Basha Dam, Chairman WAPDA Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (R) had a detailed round of the dam site, the project colony at Thor and model village Harpan Das being developed for resettlement of the project’s affectees. Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Tahir Hussain also accompanied the Chairman during the visit.
The Chairman also had a meeting with the Chief Secretary Gilgit Baltistan at Chillas and discussed with him the matters related to acquisition of land for Diamer Basha Dam Project, resettlement of the affectees and the measures being taken by WAPDA for socio-economic uplift of the area.
Later, the Chairman visited Dasu Hydropower Project to witness construction activities on the preliminary works for infrastructure development to support initiation of construction works on the main components of the project. The Chairman also met local Jirga headed by Member Provincial Assembly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abdul Sattar to persuade them for their support in land acquisition for the project so that construction work on the project could be started without any further delay. The Chairman also announced to start work immediately to improve local roads to facilitate the local populace as confidence building measures.
