Wamiq Farooq killing: Court gives police more time to file report

Srinagar, March 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a court granted more than a month to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of police, probing the killing of teenager Wamiq Farooq in 2010, to file its final report in the case.Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar, Rajeev Gupta, said. “Prosecuting Officer (PO) seeks time to submit its report. The SIT may submit its report as observed in order on 22nd of January on or before next date of hearing (on 25 April),”

The school going boy, Wamiq Farooq, was killed on January 31, 2010 when a teargas shell hit him on the head near Gani Memorial Stadium at Rajouri Kadal in old part of Srinagar. Soon after Wamiq’s killing, his father, Farooq Ahmad, had filed a complaint before the CJM seeking directions to police to register an FIR against the Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Khaliq for offences under section 302 RPC.

Wamiq’s father in his application had maintained that his son was killed by police. On different versions of the case, the CJM on February 5, 2011 had directed the IGP to constitute SIT, which was finally put in place on July 3 last year.
