Islamabad, November 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): Changing perceptions to enable enhancement of trade between Pakistan and USA is very important. This was stated by the President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik as he welcomed the US Consul General in Karachi, H.E. Mr. Michael Dodman during his visit to Federation House on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013.
He was joined in the meeting with leading businessman Mr. S.M. Muneer, President Pakistan India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Office Bearers, Secretary General, and others.
Mr. Zubair Ahmed Malik while welcoming His Excellency, shed light on the major consequences of War on Terror, and said that Pakistan was and is paying a very heavy price for fighting this war and it is the responsibility of all the stakeholders to ensure that this violence does not spill over.
He said that the business community was the main affectee of this fiasco, and their losses have reached in billions of dollars. USA is the largest trading partner of Pakistan but there is no preferential access given to key Pakistani products. He said that FPCCI represents the private business sector as the apex trade body, and it is our basic duty to represent the sectors interest at all appropriate levels, and draw attention to issues faced by the business community of Pakistan.
He further stated that areas such as Energy and Power Generation, Education, and Trade Development need urgent attention from USA, as these areas ensure positive environment for furthering trade activities.
The participants were unanimous in their opinion that direct American investment and attention was the need of the hour especially in the dwindling energy sector. It was pointed out to the Consul General that construction of energy pipelines from neighboring countries through Pakistan was an urgent matter that requires International support, particularly from the US.
President FPCCI further said that Power Parks generating coal-power in excess of 6000MW. The opportunity rich region of Gwadar should also be explored through close coordination with Pakistan Government.
Responding to the points raised by the participants, Mr. Dodman informed that USA was always keen to extend a friendly hand to Pakistani public, and they are well aware of the severe impact the War on Terror is having on the whole of Pakistan. The US is running special Assistance programs in the fields of Research, Education, Poverty alleviation, and empowering independent economic enterprises to flourish.
The Consul General lauded the recent meetings held by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Washington, and said that was a step in the right direction, and showed the current Government’s desire to take bilateral relations between USA and Pakistan in the right direction. He stated that USA should be involved in developing the energy sector in Pakistan, especially the Green Energy sector as American companies have a lot of experience and skills in this field.
