Srinagar, July 16, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Right To Information (RTI) Movement has said that the puppet administration is putting the lives of people at stake by failing to test the effect of shelling on drinking water sources in the areas around Tosa Maidan in Badgam district.
RTI Movement Chief spokesman, Farooq Kuthoo in a statement issued in Srinagar said that he had filed an application with the Home Department of the territory seeking information about the tests conducted by the authorities on the effect of shelling on water bodies in Tosa Maidan.
“In its reply, the department has revealed that the authorities have never tested the effects of shelling on water bodies in the area, nor does it have any records available,” Kuthoo said.
“The response is clear indication that the administration is least bothered about the precious human, animal and plant life in Kashmir,” he deplored.
Quoting a study conducted by Soura Institute of Medical Sciences, he said that there had been a rise in cancer cases in the occupied territory. “We fear one of the reasons could be unsafe drinking water supplied by three streams originating from Tosa Maidan. We demand that a study should be conducted instantly on how hazardous the water is supplied by these streams,” said Kuthoo.
Dr Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Chief Patron Tosa Maidan Bachao Front, and Chairman RTI Movement said that Nullah Sukhnag, Suresh Nullah and Nullah Ferozpur were the main water sources to three districts – Srinagar, Badgam and partly Baramulla. Tosa Maidan has been used by Indian army as firing range for the last 50 years.
