United States International Development Power Distribution Programme begins Outage Reduction Devices Project for DISCOs

Islamabad, August 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): The USAID Power Distribution Program organized a two-day workshop on “Developing Proposals for the Outage Reduction Devices (ORD) Program” for the planning engineers of seven DISCOs. The focus of the workshop was on the different aspects of developing proposals for the proper utilization of the ORDs (i.e. switches, fuses, fault indicators and low voltage protection switches for installation on 11kv distribution feeders), through the application of planning tools USAID previously provided to all nine DISCOs including Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO), Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).

The reliability of electric distribution systems is critically important for both utilities and customers. Due to the lack of sectionalizing devices in DISCOs distribution system, consumers not in the vicinity of the area of the fault are also affected during outages. USAID is providing DISCOs with quality outage reduction devices i.e. Switches, Fuses, fault indicators and L.V protection switches. On-load and off-load gang operated and disconnect switches are procured and will be installed so that faulted line sections can be isolated to reduce the outage time for unaffected consumers and improve customer service.

Seven sub divisions from seven DISCOs have been selected for distribution system area planning and installation of the Outage Reduction Devices (ORD). DISCO’s planning engineers have been trained to use power system analysis software Synergies for the system planning and analysis.

They will run load flow studies of the selected distribution system and will generate proposals for the installation of new devices to improve system reliability and efficiency. The analysis and location selections will be completed by end of September 2013. It is anticipated the DISCOs will accomplish the installation by year end 2013. About 415 proposals will be created for the installation of 3565 devices in seven DISCOs.
