UN Human Rights Chief voices concern over situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir

Islamabad, February 27, 2021 (PPI-OT): The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet has expressed continuing concern over the deteriorating situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on human rights issues, she said the Commission is continuing to monitor the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where restrictions on communications and clampdowns on civil society activists, remain of concern.

Michelle Bachelet said the communications blockade has seriously hampered civic participation, as well as business, livelihoods, education, and access to health-care and medical information. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was also critical of action taken by Indian authorities against journalists covering protests in India and Occupied Kashmir and efforts to curb freedom of expression on social media. She said continued protests by thousands of farmers in India highlight the importance of ensuring laws and policies are based on meaningful consultations with those concerned.
