Two-day Disaster Exhibition at Peshawar University

Peshawar, November 07, 2012 (PPI-OT): Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management (CDPM), University of Peshawar in collaboration with NDMA, PDMA and FADMA organized a two-day Disaster Exhibition at the campus. The Chairman NDMA Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir was the Chief Guest of inaugural ceremony of Exhibition. The other delegates included Prof Dr Amin Nawaz Khan, Dean CDPM, Mr Ono van Menon, ACF International – Pakistan representative and Dr Muhammad Riaz, Acting Vice Chancellor UoP.

The purpose of the exhibition was to create awareness about all kinds of disasters like floods and earthquakes, cyclones, droughts, landslides among students, professionals and other relevant stakeholders.

Participants boasted stalls at the exhibition sporting different models and equipment that can be used in disaster risk reduction and management.

At the keynote event, Dean CDPM said that UoP took the initiative on disaster risk management in the light of natural catastrophes since 2005. The centre offers rigorous training and education on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

Dr Amin Nawaz said that in two years’ a number of students will graduate with extensive knowledge on disaster risk management and will be instrumental in institutions like NDMA, PDMAs, DDMA and ERRA. This will help boost effectiveness of these bodies in managing natural ordeals like 2005 earthquake and 2010 super flood.

ACF Rep. Ono van Menon said that one out of four children is suffering from malnutrition and that shows weakened resilience. He noted that he wants to create and enhance awareness among the masses.

Chairman NDMA Dr. Zafar Iqbal stated that Pakistan is a disaster prone country inheriting various types of disasters including natural and human induced. He informed the audience that NDMA and R/ PDMAs are closely working to enhance the copy capacity of local communities against the increasing risk of multi- disasters and create a disaster resilience nation.

keeping in view the vulnerability of the country to various disasters, NDMA has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to manage the colossal aftermaths of catastrophes resulting in massive human and property losses and to galvanize the organizational capacity to respond in a coordinated manner with all regional/ provincial and district DMAs.

Govt of Pakistan has adopted a paradigm shifted from response centric to preparedness by adopting transition from conventional Disaster Risk Management concepts and approaches to world class, cutting edge DRM interventions both at policy and operational levels in Pakistan.

NDMA has formulated a National DRR Policy which is to be approved in near future. NDMA has formulated National Disaster Management Plan which is ready and to be approved by NDMC very soon. This would be 10 years plan of 2012-2022.The plan will be got approved from NDMC NDMA has initiated Multi-Hazards risk and vulnerability assessment both at provincial and district level with the support of its partner organizations.

NDMA has been working to develop a viable disaster risk insurance solution especially for the most vulnerable and poor sections of the society. We are trying to come up with an index-based micro insurance solution covering different types of disasters. In the first step we are working five areas for disaster risk transferring.

NDMA is working to establish a DRF as envisaged in NDM Act 2010. We want to replicate Punjab model of rescue 1122. NDMA is supporting initiatives of the universities to support youth by training them in responding to disasters and emergency to supplement the DRF.

Mainstreaming DRR in to development is one of the priority areas of NDMA and we have developed DRR check list for Mainstreaming DRR into development process. NDMA is working both on structural and non-structural measures by building the technical capacities of relevant ministries, department and organizations at national, provincial and districts.

NDMA has developed a road map for School Safety for integrating DRR concerns into structural and non-structural measures. We are working with Some Donors on designing CBDRM programme to build the response of communities at gross-root level through transferring skills and provision of stockpiles.

He said that NDMA has initiated district-level units called District Disaster Management Units for swift response and rescue of the affected areas. These units will employ their own disaster response force that includes teams of Rescue 1122. At the end, Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir, Chairman NDMA appreciated the initiative of CDPM on organizing such a successful and important event.

In the concluding notes Acting Vice Chancellor Muhammad Riaz thanked the Chairman NDMA and other delegates for sparing their precious time and participation and hoped that this event sets precedence in creating awareness at academia to mainstream DRR and DRM consideration/ practices.
