Tributes paid to Sopore martyrs on their 20th anniversary

Srinagar, January 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the pro-freedom leaders and organisations have paid glowing tributes to the Sopore martyrs who were gunned down by Indian troops in Sopore on January 6, 1993. The All Parties Hurriyet Conference leader, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza in a statement in Srinagar said that the Sopore incident was still was still alive in the memories of the Kashmiri people.

He said that such incidents could not weaken the sentiments of Kashmiri people as they had rendered huge sacrifices for the Kashmir cause and would continue their struggle till taking the liberation movement to its logical conclusion.

The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Political Movement, Firdous Ahmad Shah, in a condolence reference at Abiguzar in Srinagar, while paying homage to the martyrs of Sopore, deplored that despite the passage of 20 years the troops involved in the incident were yet to be punished.

The Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Khawateen Markaz, Jammu and Kashmir Dukhtaran-e-Millat and the High Court Bar Association of the occupied territory in their statements also eulogised the sacrifices of Sopore martyrs.

They said that such barbaric acts by the Indian troops could not prevent the brave people of Kashmir from continuing their struggle for securing their right to self-determination. They said that the liberation movement would be taken to its logical conclusion at all costs.

It is worth mentioning here that more than 50 people were martyred and hundreds injured when Indian troops of Border Security Force had resorted to indiscriminate firing in Sopore in vengeance of the killing of their two colleagues in an attack. The troops had set the market of the town ablaze gutting down more than 350 shops and other structures on 6th January 1993.
