It’s not the time to relax but to eradicate polio once for all: Senator Ayesha

Islamabad, April 10, 2018 (PPI-OT): Pakistani nation has shown great resolve and determination to bring us to the brink of polio eradication but our message is simple that job is not finished yet and by ensuring high quality national and sub-national campaigns in April and May might be our chance to give the virus a final push out of Pakistan, said Prime Minister Focal person for Polio eradication Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq during her surprise visit to suburbs of Islamabad on Tuesday. The Senator paid a surprise visit to various localities in Islamabad including Tarlai and temporary settlements of Nomads.

She was accompanied by National Coordinator for Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Dr Rana Safdar and other senior officers of the health ministry, ICT and CDA. Noting that the polio drive in the capital is critical, the Senator said that Prime Minister of Pakistan has constituted a special task force to specifically monitor the campaign in twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi and report back to him on daily basis to ensure maximum coverage during this and all the upcoming campaigns.

Though there has been no case reported from the twin cities for over two years but virus has been found in the environmental samples of both Islamabad and Rawalpindi drainage thus raising the concerns amongst officials and communities. The Senator said that she would be personally monitoring the campaign in the city during every round. She also took notice of gaps in the provision of routine immunization services against nine deadly diseases of children in the area and issued directions to ensure that every child is immunized without fail.

Talking to the parents and communities during her field visit, Senator urged all segments of the society and especially the parents to facilitate the front line workers (Sehat Muhafiz) in this noble cause. Several community elders in the visited areas welcome the Senator and thanked the government of Pakistan for bring Pakistan this close to complete eradication of polio.

“Our Sehat Muhafiz have brought us so close to polio eradication that we cannot afford to relax hence me and leadership of EOC have come out to support our valiant teams for getting rid of this disease completely” said Prime Minister’s Focal Person (PMFP), Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq while talking to the community elders and parents during her door to door visit.

The second last polio campaign of the current low transmission season has commenced from today, 9th April across all provinces and areas of the country except Bajour agency of FATA starting later. A total of 37.71 million under five children will be vaccinated including 19.38 million in Punjab, 8.85 million in Sindh, 5.73 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2.46 million in Balochistan, 1 million in FATA, 0.7 million in AJK, 0.238 million in GB and 0.33 million children in Islamabad. It is a 3 days campaign plus 1 day catchup elsewhere and 5 days plus 2 days catch up in core reservoir areas.

During this campaign, Vitamin-A supplement will also be administered to around 35 million children aged between 6-59 months along with OPV aimed at boosting immunity against diseases including Measles. A total of 260,000 personnel will strive to achieve set targets across Pakistan including 24,661 Area Incharges, 7,977 UC Medical Officers, 190,573 Mobile, 10,235 Fixed and 12,148 Transit team members. The current Polio epidemiology in the country is best ever observed with case decline from 306 in 2014 to 54 in 2015 to 20 in 2016 and 8 in 2017.

In 2018, only one polio case has so far been reported from district Dukki, Balochistan. The Senator also inspected the children playing in the streets to see whether their fingers had been marked after they were vaccinated. Senator talked to polio teams and checked their tally sheets. She also advised polio teams to pay attention to children who may be visiting relatives since there is a possibility that such children are missed in the drive. She further directed that each house, including makeshift shanties, nomads and travelling families with under five children should be administered polio drops and properly marked with permanent markers to ensure each household is covered.

Canadian Parliamentarians appreciates Pakistan progress in fight against polio

Islamabad, April 09, 2018 (PPI-OT): Prime Ministers Focal Person on Polio Eradication, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq has appreciated the continued support from the government and people of Canada for Pakistan’s polio eradication effort. Welcoming a parliamentary delegation comprising of members from both the Commons and Senate of Canada at the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication, Senator Farooq said our collective efforts have led to tremendous strides in Pakistan’s journey towards polio-free status.

We are now closer than ever to succeeding and we are committed to driving this virus out of our nation with continued resolve, focus and determination. Canada has been a true friend of Pakistan; not only inside Pakistan through the very engaged High Commission team, but also at the global level. We are also grateful for your proactive advocacy at the global level in support of polio eradication in Pakistan. She said. National Coordinator of the Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication, Dr Rana Mohammad Safdar briefed the Canadian delegation on the progress made by the programme over the past recent years.

The delegation appreciated the progress and expressed keen interest in the programmes ability to transform public health in Pakistan and finding other technical areas where Canada could further strengthen the Polio programme in particular and public health system in general. Between 2016 to 2018, Canada has given 40 million CAD to the Pakistan polio eradication programme. This generous support helped the programme implement introduce improvements across the board, including advancements to surveillance structure, ComNet structure, Community Based Vaccination, monitoring of campaigns, and capacity building of polio eradication workforce.

The government of Pakistan is fully committed to the implementation of the National Emergency Action Plan via focused Emergency Operations Centers at national and provincial levels, with emphasis on evidence-based decision making, a one-team approach, front-line workers at the center of the eradication effort, effective oversight of performance management and accountability, and a commitment to coordinate with Afghanistan in order to reach and vaccinate high-risk groups.

Briefing the delegated Dr Rana Safdar said that at the end of 2017 Pakistan achieved a 97% drop of cases from the dire situation of 304 in 2014, 54 in 2015 and 20 in 2016. In 2018, Pakistan registered one case till this time. The response to the new case is currently underway with the objective of protecting other children in the community, and stopping circulation of the virus. One of the key interventions that has helped programme to register lowest ever cases has been the massive investment in our frontline workers.

They are local to their communities, well trained and empowered, who have earned the trust of the communities. These committed have helped in reaching the most marginalized and hardest to reach communities. Each nation-wide round these frontline workers aim to reach approximately 39 million children with the polio vaccine. Presenting a note of thanks on behalf of the delegation, Murray Rankin, a senior parliamentarian from Victoria appreciated the progress made by Pakistan Polio Programme, saying Canada remains a proud partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and will continue to do so until the job is done.

Audit Manual for Foreign Funded Projects to help AGP

Islamabad, April 06, 2018 (PPI-OT):Audit Manual for Foreign Funded Projects will help AGP in ensuring the standardization of audit checks and procedures while carrying out the audit of donor funded projects. It will also help in achieving the mandate of AGP to express opinion on transparency, adequacy and effectiveness of accounting, financial and operational controls in public projects, said Auditor General of Pakistan, Javaid Jehangir, while talking to the delegation of Asian Development Bank led by its Country Director.

The amount committed to the Government of Pakistan by the donor agencies is the money that comes from the public funds of those countries and our objective for the audit of foreign aided projects is to express an opinion as to whether the financial information presented in those financial statements presents a true and fair view in all material respects to ensure the donors of the accountability of the funds entrusted to the Government of Pakistan, AGP added.

Country Director of ADB while lauding the efforts of Auditor General of Pakistan said that the audit efforts of AGP are appropriately directed across the public sector and the Audit Manual for Foreign Funded Projects will be a great resource for enhancing the existing capabilities of AGP. Country Director also expressed willingness to provide support to the Auditor General’s Department in capacity building and training. Later the Country Director of ADB handed over the Audit Manual for Foreign Funded Projects to the Auditor General of Pakistan. The Audit Manual was jointly prepared by the AGP, Asian Development Bank and KPMG.

Prime Minister meets representatives of Hurriyat Conference at Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Islamabad, April 04, 2018 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi met with representatives of All Parties Hurriyat Conference at Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir today. Hurriyat Conference representatives included Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, Syed Ejaz Rehmani, Mrs. Shamim Shaal and Ishtiaq Hameed. Representatives of All Parties Hurriyat Conference thanked the Prime Minister for meeting them and highlighting the Human Rights violations in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

They highlighted that diplomatic efforts need to be enhanced to sensitise international community. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the Government and people of Pakistan have always supported the implementation of UNSC Resolutions that call for right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir. The Prime Minister stated that myself and my cabinet members are here to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir. All political parties are united on Kashmir issue.

We strongly condemn the brutalities inflicted by Indian Forces on innocent and unarmed people of Kashmir, added the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan’s Foreign Office and all diplomatic missions abroad are at all times propagating for the implementation of UNSC resolutions on Kashmir. “I myself have highlighted the Kashmir issue in all my meetings at UN and OIC”, stated the PM.

The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts and sacrifices of All Parties Hurriyat Conference for continuously highlighting the Human Rights violations and putting a brave resistance to the Indian atrocities. The Prime Minister informed that Government of Pakistan will send envoys to 6 important capitals to highlight the brutalities of Indian forces. The Prime Minister assured that the Government, People and all political parties of Pakistan will continue to vigorously provide moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmir cause.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minster for Kashmir Affairs Chaudhry Barjees Tahir, Minister for Climate Change Mushahidullah Khan, Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer, Minister for Human Rights Mumtaz Ahmad Tarar and Chairman of the Special Committee of the Parliament on Kashmir Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman. President AJ and K Sardar Masood Khan, Prime Minister of AJ and K Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan, Speaker AJ and K Legislative Assembly Shah Ghulam Qadir and senior officials were also present.
