Peshawar, March 24, 2015 (PPI-OT): The third round of polio vaccination in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the “Sihat Ka Ittehad” program concluded. During the round that lasted for three consecutive days, about 5.1 million children under the age group of five years were vaccinated across the province which is more that 96% percent of the total target set for the round. Special catch up activities are going on to achieve the remaining target as well.
According to a report of Polio Emergency Operation Centre of Health Department, 199623 children vaccinated in district Abbottabad, 174697 in Bannu, 85267 in Batgram, 192085 in Buner, 262182 in Charsadda, 16379 in Chitral, 295948 in D.I. Khan, 279439 in Dir lower, 192168 in Dir upper, 115259 in Hangu, 185620 in Harripur, 127442 in Karak, 184756 in Kohat , 47630 in Kohistan, 165493 in Lakki Marwat, 124972 in Malakand, 166420 in Masehra, 370892 in Mardan,258085 in Nowshehra, 714283 in Peshawar, 159220 in Shangla, 247144 in Swabi, 430499 in Swat and79539 were vaccinated in Tank while final report from Torghar has not been received yet. During the campaign cases of refusal have also been reported in some districts out of them Peshawar is on the top.
Meanwhile, a special campaign of Injectable Polio Vaccination (IPV) was also kicked off in district Peshawar and Bannu for being high risk areas. These two districts are considered to be high risk areas with regard to polio virus on the ground that majority of the internally displace persons of tribal areas and Afghan refugees live mostly in these districts. The special IPV campaign will continue upto 28th March and a total of 297451 children of four months to twenty three months will be administered IPV.
