The President of National Democratic Institute called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr

Islamabad: A delegation of National Democratic Institute (NDI) headed by Mr. Kenneth Wollack, President NDI, today called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

Country Director NDI Mr. Peter Manikas, Ms. Sandra Houston, country representative, and Deputy Country Director Jumana Ealal, were accompanying Mr. Wollack.

Senator Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Leader of the House in Senate, Senator Jahangir Badar, MNA Ms. Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar were assisting the President during the meeting.

Mr. Kenneth Wollack briefed the President about various activities of NDI for strengthening democracy in various countries of the world particularly in Pakistan.

The President during the meeting appreciated the work of NDI for promotion of democracy and strengthening democratic institutions around the world and in Pakistan. The President especially thanked the NDI for their support and assistance to Shaheed Bhutto Foundation in advancing FATA reforms in Pakistan.

He said that the present Government was following the policy of reconciliation as laid by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. He said that our efforts to strengthen democracy need to be complemented by the International community so that the democratic procedures in the country are further strengthened.

The President said that democracy was the only option for our people as a bulwark against many ills including extremism, poverty, deprivation and militant mindset. He said that it was the only the democracy that serves the purpose of real empowerment of the down-trodden and poor people.

The President recounted various achievements of the present Government to strengthen democracy and for real empowerment of the people. In this context he particularly mentioned the 18th Amendment, the FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan reforms and the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP).

Mr. Kenneth Wollack thanked the President for meeting and assured that the Institute would continue to work for promoting and strengthening democracy and democratic institutions in the country.
