Islamabad: After the initial consultations with the members of the Council and other relevant stake-holders, the Chairman, Press Council of Pakistan, Raja Shafqat Abbasi has summoned the first meeting of the Council on 1st November, 2011 in the Council’s Secretariat at Islamabad. The Press Council of Pakistan was established in 2002 through Ordinance.
Press Council of Pakistan is an autonomous and apex body which consists of 19 members, 4 members nominated by APNS, 4 members nominated by CPNE, 4 members nominated by PFUJ, Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council, one member each nominated by Higher Education Commission and National Commission on the Statues of Women and one MNA nominated each by Leader of the House and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
These members includes; Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, Mr. Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami, Syed Faseih Iqbal, Ms. Jugnoo Mohsin, Mr. Majid Nizami, Mr. Zia Shahid, Mr. Wamiq A. Zuberi, Mr. Siddiq Baloch, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Mughal, Mr. Bachal Laghari, Mr. Iqbal Jafri, Mr. Nasir Zaidi, Mr. Abdul Lateef Afridi, Ms. Aayesha Ikram, Mrs. Nasreen Aslam Azhar, Mrs. Yasmeen Rehman and Ms. Saira Afzal Tarar, who were nominated by their respective organizations in 2009-2010 and were duly notified by the Government.
The mandate of the Council is to receive the complaints and to enforce ethical code of practice, while preserving freedom of press and its independence, to develop good media practice. Agenda of the meeting is to discuss the draft regulations of the Council, procedure for lodging complaints and generating financial resources for the functioning and establishing Regional Offices in the Provincial Capitals, etc. Registrar of the Council has issued invitations to its members.
