Lahore, March 16, 2017 (PPI-OT):The first phase of Census 2017 gets underway today. The fact that the exercise is taking place after a gap of nearly 18 years makes it all the more important. The census exercise is not just about counting the people living across vast swathes of the country; it is also about gathering valuable data that has such a practical value for a score of sectors. This way we are going to get information about several things such as level of education attainment, health and access to social service delivery from the government institutions.
The real value of the whole census exercise lies in providing the policy makers, research community and the government authorities with reliable data that can help them plan keeping in view of the present as well as future needs. It will further enable the government to reset its priorities and rethink resource allocation accordingly.
For social sector dividends and other benefits to accrue optimally from the census exercise, it is essential that the process of data gathering enjoys reliability, which in turn is possible if the citizens of Punjab and Pakistan fully cooperate with the census conducting officials. By supplying the information voluntarily and readily as required, we will actually be making sure that the exercise does not hit snags and remains free from the controversy.
I would appeal to the people to consider this to be their national duty to cooperate fully with the census conducting teams. We should understand that dissemination of correct information will help improve the targeting of the policy besides giving a clearer picture of demographic trends. Let us make sure that the census achieves its desired objectives.
