Sokeless Tobacco were also dangerous to health – Minister for health

Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw Minister for Information and Public Relations Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said that not only the tobacco smoking but the smokeless tobacco were also dangerous to health as well adding that we should hate and avoid it for being a social evil. It was need of the hour to run a mass awareness campaign to protect the young generation from the ill effects of tobacco use and for this purpose, he added, if needed, legislation would be made on government level.

He was addressing a seminar regarding “Eradication of smoke-less tobacco” under the auspices of Sustainable Development Vision Pakistan at a local hotel at Peshawar on Monday. Minister Information said that whether it was intoxication of tobacco smoking, use of snuff, supari or paan, we should consider it a bad habit and discourage those who use it as a fashion. Mian Iftikhar said that those people were deplorable who consider intoxication as proud worthy and added such elements should be considered a stigma on the face of society.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that unluckily snuff was being considered as part of our culture while the fact was against it. He said it was not part of our culture but it was a yoke of slavery of Britishers. He said we should have to get rid of this symbol of slavery for the sake of our health and national prestige.

He said he would also raise voice on the floor of Assembly against addiction particularly the snuff and collectively evolve a tragedy for its eradication. He said if research on tobacco and nicotine was carried out on proper lines it could be utilized positively.

He said future course of action would be prepared after consultations with farmers in this connection. He eulogized the efforts of sustainable vision for controlling the addicts and added that for this purpose special mass awareness campaigns would be arranged in urban and rural areas.
