Karachi, December 05, 2017 (PPI-OT):Mir Salman Ali vice president of the Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) emphasized at the first day of the three day ‘Twentieth Sustainable Development Conference’ (SDC) the priority for the micro to medium sized sector at a local hotel in Islamabad.
The overarching theme of the SDC 2017 is ‘Seventy Years of Development: The Way Forward’. Each SDC is designed to be a forum for exchanging dialogues on sustainable development with academia, civil society, legislators and policy makers. This year’s Conference is reflecting on a collective vision for sustainable development in Pakistan and the region. The Conference will review Pakistan’s seventy years of existence and past 25 years of think tanks; and, the role of thinking community in their contribution towards peace and sustainable development.
In the midst of very senior personalities and experts young Mir Salman Ali was asked to speak on ‘Challenges and Potential of SME Sector Financing in Pakistan And a Way Forward through CPEC’, organized by Dr Nadia Farooq, Centre of Excellence-CPEC and Dr Sajid Amin, SDPI. He pointed out the need for access to finance and the importance of modern risk management concept to be adopted by banks. The need for collateral management coupled with logistics to enable the sector benefit from the opportunities which CEPEC offers. The need to make the banks comfortable in financing through credit guarantee insurance is the need of the hour.
He specifically pointed out the need for low cost premium by the government as private insurance companies charge very high premium. Highlighting the other basic requirements of the sector he urged the government to provide land at concession on pay as you earn scheme, raw material on duty, uninterrupted energy and facilities for alternate energy plants installation. He reiterated the need for modern leasing, banking, insurance and logistics facilities with technical and marketing support for the entrepreneurs at the forum.
