Karachi, March 24, 2017 (PPI-OT): Sindh minister for Social Welfare Sindh Shamim Mumtaz has directed newly appointed first Director General Sindh Child Protection Authority to immediately take measure to setup divisional offices of authority in Karachi with status of Headquarter, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur and Larkana so as to provide protection to children in case of need in line with international human rights treaties and conventions ratified by Pakistan.
Provincial minister Social Welfare who is also chairperson of SCPA expressed these views while having introductory meeting with first newly appointed DG Sindh Child Protection Authority Abdul Wahid Laghari at her office. Secretary Social Welfare Altaf Ahmed Bijarani, Director General Social Welfare Sindh Muhammad Raheem Lakho, Deputy Director Child Welfare Fozia Masoom and other concerned officers were also present.
She said that all the preparations should be completed in a month so that authority could be fully functionalized till mid April. She also directed to launch website of the authority creating linkage with child protection units and child protection officers working in various districts throughout the province with support of enhanced access to public at large.
Provincial minister remarked that role of Sindh Assembly members was commendable who always made landmark legislation like much needed Sindh Child Protection Authority Act, however, she added that process of establishing authority was delayed due to some procedural hurdles. She said that it was an important task meant to provide help to victim of physical and psychological violence, sexual abuse, commercial sexual exploitation, worst form of child labour and beggary.
She said with the grace of Almighty Allah, we have notified the rules of business of child protection authority and till mid April offices at divisional level will start functioning, while its net work to district level will be expanded in next financial year.
Minister also directed Secretary Social Welfare to convene a meeting of Sindh Child Protection Authority within fortnight which comprise two members of Sindh Assembly, Secretaries of Social Welfare, Law, Home and Labour departments and representatives of non-government organizations working on child issues i.e Plan Pakistan, Madadgar Helpline , Devcon and two experts of legal fraternity.
