Shutdown in Shopian, Pulwama against youth’s arrest

Srinagar, April 26, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama and Shopian towns against the arrest of youth by Indian police. Despite heavy deployment of Indian troops and police personnel in Pulwama, people took to the streets at many places including Tahab Chowk, Muran Chowk and Rajpora Chowk and clashed with the forces’ personnel.

The police resorted to teargas shelling and aerial firing to disperse the protestors. The locals told mediamen that the police and paramilitary personnel barged into the houses on Thursday evening after the polling for so-called elections in the town was over and thrashed the inmates ruthlessly. “Even women were not spared and property was vandalized by angry cops at many places,” they said.

People also held protests in Tral town of Pulwama district against the arrest of innocent youth by Indian police during nocturnal raids after the polling. The police and troops used brute force to break up the demonstrations.

On the other hand, complete strike was observed in Shopian town to protest the arrest of several youth by the police. The protesters told media persons that the police had arrested several youth for participating in recent pro-freedom demonstrations in the town.
