Shutdown continues in Shopian against police excesses

Srinagar, August 20, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed for the fourth consecutive day, today, in Shopian town against the excesses and illegal arrest of youth by Indian police.

All shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed in the town while skeletal private transport plied on the road.

People staged anti-India protests, despite the deployment of Indian police and troops in the town.

Scores of youth have been detained by the police for taking part in pro-freedom demonstrations. The situation in the town is tense since Saturday evening when the police had barged into residential houses, thrashing inmates and vandalizing property. The locals had called for indefinite shutdown against the police action.

On the other hand, the police have arrested three more youth in its ongoing arrest spree in Baramulla. The arrested youth have been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Baba, Mohammad Shafi Baba and Mudassir Ahmad Dar.
