Shiv Sena MPs force fasting Muslim to eat

New Delhi, July 24, 2014 (PPI-OT): In India, the MPs of Indian Hindu extremist party Shiv Sena were caught on a video footage force-feeding a fasting Muslim employee in New Maharashtra Sadan area of New Delhi.

There has been outrage in India after television footage showed a Member of Parliament from hardline Hindu outfit, Shiv Sena, trying to force-feed a man fasting for Ramadan.

The incident, which took place last week in New Delhi, when 11 Shiv Sena MPs confronted catering supervisor Arshad Zubair at new Maharashtra Sadan sparked outrage and a huge uproar in the Indian Parliament the other day and demanded action against Shiv Sena MPs involved in the incident.

The MPs were complaining about the quality of food offered at the guesthouse for officials from the state of Maharashtra, where Shiv Sena is based. The footage showed MP Rajan Baburao Vichare attempting several times to shove the chapatti into the supervisor’s mouth as a crowd gathered.

The catering company’s general manager said the MPs had marched into the dining hall last week flanked by television crews and threw kitchen items around. “They also issued physical threats to the kitchen and service staff while using highly objectionable language,” the manager said in an email to a Maharashtra government official, which was obtained by the Indian Express newspaper.

The complaint said the victim was wearing a formal uniform with the nametag at the time of force-feeding; an act caught on camera and circulated widely on social media.

Opposition Congress party legislators said the MP had violated the man’s religious beliefs by aggressively trying to shove a chapatti in his mouth. A Muslim MP from Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi demanded that a complaint be filed against the erring MPs and also their arrest.
