Seminar on Philosophy of Martyrdom held at Punjab University

Lahore: Punjab University organized a seminar on “Philosophy of Martyrdom” in the auditorium of Dr Pervez Hassan Environmental Law Centre at New Campus on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran chaired the seminar while former MPA and Member PU syndicate Syed Ehsan Ullah Waqas, renowned religious scholar Dr Ali Murtaza Zaidi, Dr Muhammad Saad Siddiqui, faculty members and a large number of students were also present.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran said war among civilizations was unavoidable. He said US had completed preparations of attack on Iran. The issue of whether US will rule the world or not, would be determined in the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. It was our responsibility to realize the threat because only those nations which prepare themselves for the inevitable encounters, emerged honourably from these.

He said the meaning of martyrdom had been distorted. Killing each other’s without any reason could not be termed as Jihad or martyrdom. He said Almighty Allah disliked mutual conflict in a society. Therefore, we should avoid sectarianism and love and respect each other’s. He said a firm belief that honour and dishonour, livelihood and life and death are in the hands of Allah makes one fearless. Our religion had taught us to live with power and dignity.

He said before Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), humanity was to form a group of human beings, who had qualities of character that made them prevail upon tyrants and unjust rulers. He said Allah’s help was promised but with the condition of good moral characteristics. He said the life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) taught us to say the truth.

Syed Ehsan Ullah Waqas requested the participants of the seminar to present the true picture of Islam through their character and conduct. He said Islam placed great emphasis on tolerance and on helping the weak. Jihad was not about possession of lands or money but it was the name of keeping the flag of Allah high. He said we should get benefit from the candle which Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) had lit. Jihad was a great part of Islam and Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) had himself wished for martyrdom.

Dr Ali Murtaza Zaidi said the real target of our life’s creation was that we should develop the characteristics of Asma-e-Husna. And there should be a reflection of the names of Allah in our characters. Only then we would become representatives of Allah on earth. He said Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and martyrdom were the same.

Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) wanted to take the humanity to a specific height and behaving well with enemies was his message. He said the life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) gave us the message to live with respect, freedom and bravery.

He said our institutions should teach the students to live freely in the true sense. We should choose our heroes from Islamic history. We should stand against every tyrant to become like Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). The life of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) gave us lesson to not have the fear of death.

Dr Muhammad Saad Siddiqui said Allah had great value of human’s life and Allah had termed the killing of one man as the killing of humanity. Our life was a chance to do good deeds for which we would be rewarded on the Day of Judgment.

He said foreign powers had united against Islam but would not be succeeded in their mission. He said martyrdom promoted patience and gratitude. It was important for martyrs to be honest and true because martyrs did not born in dishonest societies.
