Sehrai demands release of all Kashmiri prisoners

Srinagar, January 30, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, senior APHC leader and the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, expressing serious concern over the plight of illegally detained Kashmiri political prisoners has demanded their immediate release.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar said, “We call on the authorities to release all political prisoners and to stop the arbitrary detention of political leaders, activists and independent thinkers who demand their fundamental right, the right to self-determination.” He said that majority of the Kashmiri prisoners had been shifted from the Kashmir Valley to various prisons of Jammu region and India in brazen violation of the Geneva Conventions and the verdict of Indian Supreme Court that emphasize on keeping the prisoners in jails closer to their homes.

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairman questioned the silence of human rights organizations across the globe and in India over the plight of the Kashmiri political detainees. He said the Indian government had to understand that the prisoners inside the jails are also like other people living outside the prison and they were entitled to all the rights enjoyed by other people. He said the impact of imprisonment on the health of a political prisoner during the imprisonment and also the post-imprisonment health issues are a serious concern and it is important to know if at all they are given any kind of medical care, which is their fundamental right and not a plea, during the imprisonment period.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai demanded an end to the state culture of harassment and intimidation through spurious cases against peaceful political dissenters. “The prolonged and in many cases perpetual detention of Kashmiri inmates is the worst form of human rights violations,” he said. Moreover, he said, there are many Kashmiris who have been rotting in jails of Kashmir and India for the past several years, some without trial, and an overwhelming majority of these prisoners has been denied a fair chance to defend themselves in court.

The APHC leader also extended his condolence and grief over the demise of Habibullah Shah of Langate area of Handwara whose son, Peer Zahoor Ahmed Shah, is languishing in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail for last two months. He demanded immediate release of the detainee. Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai also condemned nocturnal raids on the residences of TeH District President for Baramulla, Molvi Mufti Abdul Ahad, and his brother, Muhammad Shafi Rathar at Tarzoo in Sopore and arrest of Mufti Ahad and his two nephews.
